What is Tripwire, Upsell or Simple Bundle?

A tripwire, upsell, and simple bundle are distinct, commonly used marketing strategies designed to increase customer acquisition, boost order values, and enhance revenue within a sales funnel. They often work together to turn prospects into paying customers and, eventually, loyal, high-value clients. 

Here is a breakdown of each:

1. Tripwire

A tripwire is an irresistible, low-cost offer (usually a digital product priced between $7 and $50) designed to turn a new lead or subscriber into a customer immediately. 

  • Purpose: To break down the initial barrier of trust, making it easy for someone to “pull out their wallet” and make a first purchase.
  • Key Characteristics: High value for a very low price, often presented as a one-time offer (OTO) right after someone downloads a freebie (lead magnet).
  • Examples: A $17 template pack, a $27 mini-course, or a $7 ebook.
  • Psychology: It uses the “commitment and consistency” principle; once a person makes a small purchase, they are much more likely to make a second, larger purchase. 

2. Upsell

An upsell is a higher-ticket offer presented to a customer after they have already committed to buying a product, with the goal of increasing the total revenue of that sale. 

  • Purpose: To increase the average order value (AOV) by offering a “deluxe” version or a complementary, higher-value product.
  • Key Characteristics: Presented after the initial purchase is made, often on the thank-you page or immediately after checkout.
  • Examples: Upgrading from a $47 course to a $297 bundle, or offering a $50 coaching session after a $10 ebook purchase. 

3. Simple Bundle

A simple bundle is the practice of packaging multiple products or services together and selling them for a single, often discounted price. 

  • Purpose: To increase the perceived value of an offer and raise the Average Order Value (AOV).
  • Key Characteristics: Simplifies the decision-making process for the customer by offering a complete solution (e.g., “The Starter Kit”).
  • Examples: A “30-day social media plan” that includes templates, a guide, and a checklist, all for one price.
