YouTube Monetization Is Changing in 2027: A Plain-English Guide for Creators

YouTube has officially announced major updates to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), scheduled to roll out on February 1, 2027.

With headlines spreading rumors about “monetization doubling,” it is easy for beginner and small creators to feel overwhelmed. In this straightforward guide, we break down what is actually changing, what stays the same, and what you need to do next.

Will You Lose YouTube Monetization? 2027 Rules Explained

What Stays the Same?

The biggest relief for new and growing creators is that the entry-level YPP tier is not going away. You can still qualify for fan funding (Super Thanks, Memberships) and YouTube Shopping with:
500 Subscribers
3,000 Watch Hours (in 365 days) OR 3 Million Shorts Views (in 90 days)

What Is Changing on February 1, 2027?

For new creators applying to earn Watch Page Ad Revenue and YouTube Premium Revenue, the performance requirements are increasing:

Watch Hours: Increasing from 4,000 to 8,000 qualified public watch hours(in 365 days).
Shorts Views: Increasing from 10 million to 20 million qualified Shorts views (in 90 days).
Subscribers: Remains steady at 1,000 subscribers.

What About Existing YPP Creators?
If your channel is already monetized in YPP, you do not need to re-qualify for the new 8,000-hour threshold. Your ad monetization remains active as long as your channel adheres to standard community and monetization guidelines.

The New Shorts Maintenance Floor

Creators monetizing Shorts must maintain at least 10 million qualified Shorts views over a rolling 90-day window to keep Shorts ad and Premium revenue active. If your views dip below this floor, long-form revenue remains unaffected, and Shorts revenue automatically resumes once you pass 10 million views again.

Action Item: Accept Updated Terms
All monetizing creators must log in to YouTube Studio, navigate to the Earn section, and review and accept the updated Base Terms and monetization modules before January 31, 2027.
